If you’re hiring a van for the first time, one of the most common questions is whether you need a special licence to drive a Luton van.
The good news is that most Luton vans can be driven on a standard UK Category B driving licence, the same licence that allows you to drive a car.

What is a Luton Van?
A Luton van is a box-shaped vehicle with a large enclosed load area that extends over the cab. This design provides significantly more usable space than a standard panel van, making it a popular choice for:
– House moves
– Furniture collections
– Office relocations
– Storage unit clearances
– Large deliveries
Many Luton vans also come with a tail lift, making it easier to load heavy items such as washing machines, sofas and appliances.
We also offer Lo-Loader Luton Vans that don’t have a Tail Lift and are lower to the ground so you can just step in to the back of them. They’re great if you don’t have any particularly heavy items but still need the maximum space.
What Licence do I need?
You can hire a Luton Van as long as you meet the following criteria:
– You hold a full UK Category B driving licence.
– The vehicle’s Gross Vehicle Weight does not exceed 3,500kg.
– You meet your hire company’s age and licence requirements.
If the vehicle exceeds 3.5 tonnes, different licence categories apply, but at Pitter Self Drive we do not have any Lutons that are over 3.5T.
What is Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)?
The Gross Vehicle Weight (GVM) is the maximum legal weight of the vehicle when fully loaded. It includes:
– The vehicle itself
– Fuel
– Driver and passengers
– Cargo
It is not the amount of weight you can carry, otherwise known as the payload. Payloads vary per vehicle so please enquire if you are unsure.
Almost all standard hire Luton vans are designed to stay within the 3.5-tonne limit, allowing them to be driven on a normal car licence.
Is a Luton Van Difficult to Drive?
Many first-time customers are surprised by how easy a Luton van is to drive.
The main differences you’ll notice are:
– Increased vehicle height
– Longer braking distances
– Wider turning circle
– Greater awareness needed when reversing and parking
If it’s your first time driving a larger vehicle, a few simple precautions can make the journey much easier:
